I found a letter that Maddy wrote to me shortly after we broke up. I never stopped loving him but it wasn't fair to either of us to continue the relationship. He was unbelievably kind and compassionate, and he always made me smile, even when I didn't want to, and even now. Being the nerd he was, he wrote "Page Intentionally Left Blank :)" on the back of each page. He was always understanding (maybe a little too understanding, I mean, who reassures the person who broke their heart?!) and managed to make me feel comfortable, even when I messed up. He was extremely supportive and hard-working and encouraged those around him try their best. He believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. It was really hard not to smile around him, whether we were studying in the library for the 1000th hour that week, going on a hike, or grabbing dinner. He brought a lot of light into this world, which sounds cliche but it's true!
Ernest Hemingway said that everyone has two deaths, when they are put in the ground and the last time someone says their name. So, Maddy's not really gone. He still has a profound impact on me and many others. That impact will last forever. He inspired me to be the best version of myself. I will do what I can to carry on his legacy, from being vocal for what I believe in, to trying new foods and traveling, and even to not being trusted with the AUX (did he play Mongolian throat singing for anyone else?).
He ended the letter with, "You will always posess a piece of my heart." (If you don't count the post script apologizing for bad spelling.) I will cherish you (and your heart) and be inspired by you forever, Maddy. You will always have a place in my heart. Thank you for everything.
He looks so young in this picture, but I guess you guys were! :)
The Mongolian throat singing... oh my god. car rides with Maddy were never boring.
